(EDITOR’S NOTE: Full disclosure: As of right now I have not been to Zucotti Park. I’m going to go on Monday and bring my video camera to interview people and listen to them firsthand AND to show my support/solidarity)
I am deeply disturbed by the videos and images coming out of Oakland last night and here in New York tonight. Police are cracking down on non-violent protestors with extreme force and prejudice. This is as un-American as it gets. We wasted a trillion dollars in Iraq fighting for ‘freedom.’ OUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS ARE BEING TAKEN AWAY IF WE CAN’T PROTEST.
I don’t agree with all of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
I wish they’d ban all the fucking ‘V for Vendetta’ masks, bongos, and pot smoking and finally come up with a cohesive argument and some real spokespeople (you can hotbox the Statue of Liberty for all I care WHEN you’ve succeeded but until then you’re playing into the opposition’s hands/narrative).
If this is a real revolution we need to see people step up into REAL roles of leadership and truly start speaking out in a clear and concise tone that will resonate with the majority of the country that IS HURTING.
And we are HURTING AS A COUNTRY. The economic disparity right now in the United States is staggering. The rich have never been richer and they’ve made it clear they don’t want some, they want it ALL.
YOU NEED TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT WITH 3 SIMPLE POINTS:
1) Democrats AND Republicans have both fucked us over as a country by deregulating the banking and insurance industries over the past thirty years. Both parties are at fault for this. Have specific, glaring example to quote WITH ANNOTATION from unbiased government agencies.
Hammer home the number of CEO’s that have destroyed their companies and gotten huge payouts.
Breakdown the economic disparity numbers in easy to read/understand ways. This is extremely hard but a thirty-second soundbite NEEDS this to be effective at getting the message out. For YouTube and Twitter to the major networks and cable, we all know how image is everything.
2) Cite specific laws that Congress must pass immediately. I don’t know them. I should but you have to make clear which bill or bills must get passed immediately. Find a nickname for the bill. Semantics are everything. Republicans have mastered this art. Time to outFOX them.
3) This is all about narrative. We need young people to step up and become REAL spokespeople. If the country and the world start to see a single face or a board of leaders become the spokespeople/persons it will resonate more and more if you find the right people. And that can’t be that hard. Articulate, outgoing, succinct, funny, and outraged as hell but respectful. There are a ton of people who just got done with college only to find out that their future has been wiped out by the greed of powerful.
FIND THEM. THEY ARE AMONGST THE PROTESTORS NOW.
No more pussy-footing around. The police are starting to use the big guns. It’s time to take them on with peaceful actions and powerful words. It’s time to prove that our generation will not be stepped on. That our voice WILL BE HEARD.
That EVERYONE will have an actual shot at the American Dream.
